History

The National Council of Women of Papua New Guinea was established in 1975 after the International Year for Women. The establishment of the NCW was enacted by parliament in 1979 paving the way for women’s active participation in nation building through a recognized entity.

The National Council of Women began with only its principal members, the twenty (20) Provincial Council of Women. The council has expanded since and today its membership has increased to 42 representative organizations.

The NCW Secretariat has four (4) salaried staff and is headed by a Executive Director.

Purpose

Be the mouthpiece for women and provide opportunities for equal participation by women at all levels. To safe guard PNG traditional and cultural values an uphold the institutions of family and marriage

Objectives

  • Encourage  and provide opportunities for mutual understanding among women in Papua New Guinea.
  • Represent the women’s views at all levels and publicize these views in the country as it sees fit.
  • Promote understanding and exchange views with regional and international  organizations, in matters of common concern to women and
  • To work in close co-operation with other groups and organizations and carry on or participate, either alone or in conjunction  with other person or body, in any business or  other activities of any kind, with the objective of benefiting the community as whole or women in particular, and to conduct business or other activities in accordance with the rules from time to time.
  • To safe guard PNG traditional cultural values and uphold the institution of family and marriage free from violence.
