The APEC Group of Friends on Disability (GOFD) Symposium held last Friday 18th of May 2018 at the International Convention Centre in Port Moresby ended on a high with participating Economies putting forward some recommendations for Papua New Guinea.
The Theme of the Symposium is “Remove Barriers – Make Rights Real, An Investment for Persons with Disabilities in a Digital Age.”
Chair of Group of Friends on Disability, Mr You Liang from the Republic of China when giving his opening speech said that, Individual Action Plans for each Economies must now focus on Persons With Disabilities while there must be also greater collaboration amongst GOFD Economies covering all sectors with the Government system of each economies if we are to Remove Barriers and Make Rights Real for Persons with Disabilities.
The Economy of United State of America made one critical point during discussion time that in order to Make Rights Real for Persons with Disabilities, there must be a Legislation established and the Political Will to help drive the Act.
Meanwhile, GOFD Chair, Mr Liang highlighted that the Establishment of Group of Friends on Disabilities is part of a worldwide movement focussing on the 5 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) for the purpose of empowering and prosperity of Persons with disabilities.
He said that GOFD is a Coordination Mechanism which needs cooperation from APEC Economies to ensure Persons with Disabilities are entitled to enjoy economic growth as well.
