The Inter-Faith Dialogue is a group consisting of nine representatives from different faiths in Papua New Guinea that recognises the importance of interfaith dialogue and cooperation in the promotion of regional peace and security. These are Baha’i, Seventh Day Adventist, Catholic Church, Islamic Society, United Church, Anglican Church, Lutheran Church and Buddhists.
The establishment of the Inter-Faith Dialogue Desk was made possible through the Department For Community Development (DFCD) in order to better coordinate communication with different faith organisations as PNG now has a number of faiths living side by side in the country.
PNG was among 16 other countries that participate in the Regional Interfaith Cooperation for Peace, Development and Human Dignity which was held in 2007 to which DFCD Secretary Joseph Klapat led the delegation of nine members: the third Asia-Pacific Regional Inter-Faith Dialogue in Waitangi, New Zealand.
Inter-Faith Dialogue acknowledges the following:
The importance of interfaith dialogue and cooperation in the promotion of regional peace and security;
The contribution of interfaith dialogue and cooperation in the promotion of regional social and economic development and in upholding the principle of the holiness of human dignity
The crucial role of education in promoting interfaith understanding and cooperation
The influence of the media on interfaith and intercultural understanding.
