The Papua New Guinea National Youth Commission is committed to helping young men and women in the social, spiritual, political, economic and cultural development of the country through active participation in the affairs of families and the activities of their communities.
The Youth Commission facilitates and supports the training, education and rehabilitation of young men and women so as to improve the quality of their lives, the lives of their families and communities as they grow into responsible adult citizens.
The core functions of the Youth Commission are as follows;
To coordinate policy development and provide policy advice to the Government on matters pertaining to youth;
To provide policy advice to the Provincial Governments and Local-level Governments on matters pertaining to youth;
To identify and provide training opportunities for employees of National, Provincial and Local-level Governments as well as for other young men and women;
To facilitate efficient research on youth matters;
To provide technical specialist advice to Provincial and Local-level Governments, particularly on matters relating to youth;
To establish standards and reinforce and monitor the level of services offered to youth by Government and non-profit organisations;
To monitor the execution of National Youth Development Plans at the Provincial and District levels;
To provide opportunities to enable youth to participate meaningfully in activities at the International, National and Local-levels.
The Youth Commission Office seeks to encourage and provide avenues for young men and women at the local level to enter the workforce in order to create and maintain a regular cash income.
The Commission works in collaboration with other government organisations, churches, NGOs, Youth Movement Organisations such as the Scouts and Girl Guides, and private enterprise in order to strengthen their work with young people.
