The Papua New Guinea Sports Foundation is an institution that provides the coordination, leadership and promotion of sports in Papua New Guinea.
The Sports Foundation was formally known as PNG Sports Commission. However, the passage of the PNG Sports Foundation Act 2006 by Parliament in October 2006 repealed the 1993 Sports Commission Act.
The Foundation three main objectives are to:
Encourage the private sector to contribute to the funding of sport to supplement assistance by the Government;
Provide leadership in the development of PNG’s performance in sport; and
Encourage increased participation and “Sport for All” by Papua New Guineans in sport.
Moreover, the Sports Foundation is tasked by the PNG Government to manage and maintain three major sports centres for the public. These are:
Sir John Guise Stadium
Sir Ignatius Kilage Stadium; and
National Sports Institute
The Sports Foundation also operates in four regional centres, in addition to managing the National Sports Institute at Goroka. The regional operations are:
Highlands Region-Goroka
Islands Region-Kokopo
Momase Region-Lae
Southern Region-Port Moresby
The Foundation function is divided into five divisions:
National Sports Institute (Education and Training)
Corporate Services (Finance and Administration)
Commercial and Facilities
Sports Coordination and Development and;
Executive Division
Each of these four divisions is headed by a Director, all reporting to the Executive Director.
The PNG Sports Foundation also employs two categories of employees. Those on Government payroll approved by the Department for Personnel Management, most of these officers are engaged in sports related areas and finance, administration and human resources. The other category is those staff employed by the Foundation in areas of facilities, securities, grounds and fields, maintenance and casual laborers
The Sports Foundation is governed by a Board which consists of a Chairman, Deputy Chairperson and several Commissioners.
